The Governor urges everyone who travels in nature to avoid avalanche terrain and keep a good distance from steep slopes and runoff zones.

Fined for violation of the Border Control Act
An air transport company has been fined NOK 60,000 for failing to report the complete passenger list in advance. The fine has been accepted.

NVE reports that the Svalbard East region is being upgraded to danger level 4 – high avalanche danger today, 25.02.2026, due to an expectation of more loose snow available for wind transport.

High avalanche danger Tuesday and Wednesday
NVE reports that high avalanche danger - danger level 4 - is expected in the Svalbard West region on 24 and 25 February. On Wednesday, 25 February, danger level 4 is expected in Nordenskiöld Land.

New visiting hours for the public
The Governor is introducing new visiting hours for the public. The reception will be open for visits on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm. The switchboard will have the same telephone hours as before.

Report dead animals and birds
The Governor asks that people who find dead animals or birds on Svalbard notify us with the location and pictures.

New regulations on field safety in Svalbard from 1 January
The Field Operation Safety Regulations will come into force on 1 January 2026, and will replace the current regulations on tourism, field trips and other travel activities in Svalbard.

Inspection of glaciers
In September, the Governor, in collaboration with the Longyearbyen Red Cross Corps, carried out a helicopter inspection of some glaciers in Svalbard.
