Flags are flown at half-mast at public buildings in Longyearbyen. Arrangements have been made for the public to lay flowers and greetings at the statue of Gruvebusen in the town square. An official condolence protocol is available at the Longyearbyen Library. Svalbard Church is open to those who wish to light a candle or have a place to reflect.

Governor Lars Fause states:

"The Governor and the staff would like to express our deepest condolences to the Royal House and the Palace.

King Harald was very fond of Svalbard. Most recently, in June last year, he visited Bjørnøya and Longyearbyen, which was a great honour for us. This visit emphasized the importance of Svalbard for the Kingdom of Norway.

Peace be upon the King and his memory".
