Airlines collect passenger information in connection with booking or check-in for a flight, including name, contact information, travel companions, etc., so-called PNR information. To combat terrorism and other serious crime, airlines are obliged to transmit PNR information to Kripos when flying to or from abroad. The information must be reported no later than 24 hours before departure, as well as upon departure.

In the summer of 2025, a European airline operated several flights to and from Svalbard without transferring PNR information about passengers.

The matter is considered a violation of the Border Act 16a, cf. Regulations on the Control of Travelers to and from Svalbard § 10. The company has been fined NOK 200,000. The fine has been accepted.
