High avalanche danger Thursday and Friday in the south and east regions


NVE reports increased avalanche danger in the Svalbard region south and east, starting tonight, 05.03.2026.

Strong easterly winds combined with fresh snow will cause heavy snow transport and further accumulation in areas that have already received large amounts of snow recently. The snow will build up on top of an already weak snow cover.

On west-facing slopes, very large, naturally triggered avalanches can occur when the wind is at its strongest. There is also a risk of remote triggering, so that avalanches can be triggered from a distance.

Avoid avalanche terrain and keep a good distance from steep slopes and runoff zones.
