Questions about driving licenses must be directed to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration in Svalbard. Applications for a driving license are made to the Governor.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration's Svalbard office is located in the old post and bank building.
If you are going to take the theory test, renew your driving license or register your vehicle, you must appear at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration at the Statens Hus in Longyearbyen. Questions about a valid driving license in Svalbard must also be directed to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
Basic training and driving instruction
Practical driving training for class S is conducted in Svalbard by an approved traffic school. Practical driving training in other classes must be conducted on the mainland.
Driving license for class S – snowmobiles
Norwegian driving licenses for classes A1, A2, A, B and T grant driving license in class S regardless of when the driving license was acquired.

Applications for passenger carrying vehicle driver’s licence are processed by the Governor of Svalbard. The processing time is up to four weeks.
To drive passenger transport for a fee, you must bring a valid driver's license with you along with the passenger carrying vehicle driver’s licence.
The requirements for obtaining a passenger carrying vehicle driver’s licence are:
- Applicants must be at least 20 years old
- Applicants must have a valid driver's license
- Applicants must document good conduct
Foreign citizens who cannot document a longer period of residence on Svalbard or the mainland must submit a certificate of good conduct from their home country.
The passenger carrying vehicle driver’s licence is issued for a duration of five years and is valid for Longyearbyen.
