Research and educational activity
Those who will conduct research and educational activities in Svalbard must familiarize themselves with the applicable regulations. Generally, most field activities will require permission from the Governor.
All research activities must be registered or applied for via the Research in Svalbard (RiS) portal. The same applies to research reports.
Educational institutions that provide field education should not apply via the RiS portal but send their application to the Governor's regular mail service at firmapost@sysselmesteren.no.
There are four fixed application deadlines per year for research activities in Svalbard. The deadlines are:
- 15 January for fieldwork in March, April and May.
- 1 March for fieldwork in June, July and August.
- 1 July for fieldwork in September, October and November.
- 1 October for fieldwork in December, January and February.
A guide for researchers in Svalbard has been prepared and is available here (PDF).
In most cases, it is also necessary to apply to the Governor for permission to travel in the field in Svalbard. Information about which areas this applies to, and a form for applying for travel in Svalbard, can be found on our website here.
We have also collected information about travel in Svalbard on these thematic pages.
